Developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways, the GMT-Master ref. 6542 answered a specific professional need: a wristwatch capable of displaying two time zones simultaneously for intercontinental pilots. The fourth hand, completing one rotation every 24 hours, worked in concert with the bi-directional rotating bezel marked with a 24-hour scale. Early examples featured a Bakelite bezel insert in red and blue, the colours chosen for immediate visual distinction between day and night hours in the reference time zone.

Inside, Rolex fitted the Cal. 1036 or later Cal. 1065, both based on the robust 1030 architecture. These movements, running at 18,000 vph with 25 or 26 jewels respectively, featured micro-stella regulation and the brand's Perpetual rotor. The 6542 remained in production until approximately 1959, when Rolex transitioned to the ref. 1675 with crown guards and an updated movement.

The Bakelite bezel represents both the charm and challenge of the reference. The material proved fragile in service, and Rolex replaced many under warranty with aluminium inserts during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Collectors today encounter 6542 examples across a spectrum: original Bakelite examples command significant premiums, whilst later-service aluminium bezels reflect the watch's working history.
